Foshan New Station TOD Preliminary Masterplanning Study

Foshan, China
10 Design (part of Egis Group) collaborated with Shenzhen Urban Transportation Planning Centre on the preliminary masterplanning study for the Transit-oriented Development of Foshan New Station. The development will become a key connectivity node along the Guangzhou-Zhanjiang High Speed Rail Link, one of the future economic arteries of the Guangzhou-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area. The station will become a major interchange between the High Speed Rail Link, multiple metro lines and other public transport systems.

The 220,000sqm site is conveniently located in downtown Foshan, with less than 5km away from the city’s cultural and financial centre. This new gateway aspires to become a catalyst of growth and regeneration for the area. The TOD encompasses a series of high-rise office, hotel and residential towers sitting atop the station hall, which is seamlessly integrated with retail and cultural elements to divert passenger flows while servicing the needs of surrounding communities.

The primary goal is to provide efficient public transfer solutions for the growing patronage with the high speed rail station while minimising impact to the surrounding residents. A ‘Super Cross’ is thus introduced to mend the fragmented urban fabric and create convenient access between functional programs across the site.

The ‘Super Cross’ comprises two public pedestrian corridors crossing at the centre of the station. Reaching outwards to the adjacent public park and riverfront, it becomes part of the urban green space that would draw in citizens and engage the communities.

The east-west corridor is a green roof sheltering the departure hall at Level 2 of the station and the rail tracks below. Linking the retail floors at Level 3, it serves as a platform of leisure and social interaction for users in the surrounding developments. A grand skylight is embedded in the centre to let in natural light into the heart of the station, enabling the creation of an energy efficient green station for the city.

Below the railway, a primary pedestrian pass between the North and South Entrance Plazas is set at B1 level. It is also planned as an entrance from vehicle drop-offs, with vertical linkages to the station halls and metro concourse. Travellers can thus easily navigate to their next destinations as soon as they arrive.

Protruding from the overall linear building mass, the curvy form of the entrances endows a clear identity of the station. The cantilevered canopies, as an extension of the green roof, are tilted upwards above the high volume entrance hall, extending an inviting gesture to visitors from all directions of the city.

Upon its completion, the development will render a seamless travel experience as well as a vibrant public domain for the historic city.

This is the concept scheme at preliminary masterplanning study stage.  Further design development is subject to the decision by the City of Foshan.
