10 Design Wins Competition to Design Shenzhen Peng Cheng Laboratory
Last week, the Shenzhen government and Peng Cheng Laboratory jointly announced that 10 Design in collaboration with ARUP has won the competition for the Peng Cheng Laboratory (Phase 1) in Shenzhen, China. Poised as one of four major provincial laboratories in Guangdong, the development aims to attract the best talent both nationally and internationally to drive scientific discovery for the 21st century. The 400,000sqm phase 1 facility is anticipated to complete by 2023.
Design Partner at 10 Design, Nick Cordingley, said: “The team has sought to develop the design based upon the principles of ‘Hui’ and ‘Mai’, a philosophy in the Chinese culture which considers the interconnected ecosystem of a successful laboratory R&D complex.”
The masterplan of the phase 1 facility creates a connected sequence of spaces in harmony with the terrain of the site, ensuring the laboratory facility places ‘nature’ at the heart of the design approach and providing amenity and leisure spaces to cultivate a work-life balance for a world class research platform.
The competition for this landmark laboratory has attracted 51 entries both internationally and nationally. It subsequently has followed a considerable judging process by implementing multiple rounds of shortlists from 9 down to 6 and a further 3. The competition is fierce with some of the world’s top architects presented their designs. 10 Design is honoured and delighted that the ‘Hui & Mai’ scheme has led to the commission.
