We're excited to announce that Peter Wheatcroft, an Architecture Assistant at our Edinburgh studio, has been recognized with a “Special Mention” at the Architizer Vision A+ Awards 2023 for his hand-drawn drawing, “Utopia”!

The drawing depicts a dystopian dense urbanscape where mega-scale architecture, urban infrastructures, and transportation networks are reinterpreted into interchangeable structures connected with each other. The extensive details entice viewers to explore the imaginary cityscape and to rethink our collective relationship with the urban environment.

Please join us in congratulating Peter for his great achievement and read more about his creation process below!

Could you please tell us more about you?
I’m a Part 2 Architecture Assistant working in 10 Design’s Edinburgh office. I’m currently working on a residential project in the Middle East, whilst also sitting my Part 3. I was born and grew up in Singapore, and Malaysia, which gave me the bedrock for my interest in architecture and imagining what future cities would look like.

What drives you to create these kind of illustrations?
I’ve always had a passion for drawing, especially drawing machines, buildings, and science fiction environments. My main driver for producing comes from the satisfaction and engagement I get from drawing in detail and imagining walking around that cityscape. The real joy also comes from showing people my work and explaining my process.

What tools did you use? What are the most fun or challenging parts of your creation process?
I was given a drawing board by my parents when I was at school, which became my main tool for producing my drawings. They’re all hand drawn, using Rotring pens, set squares and other drafting tools. I’ve also coloured my drawings using Photoshop, which adds a greater level of depth and realism. I draw in isometric projection, so that the drawing can be read as a 3D map.

I’ve discovered that a lot of dedication and patience is needed for this type of work, as it takes around a year to complete a whole composition. However, the most rewarding part is seeing the drawing grow on the page each day, as I add new sections to the picture.

Any thoughts on winning the award?
I’m delighted to be recognised by Architizer and given the opportunity to share my work. I’m aiming to begin showcasing and sharing my process, illustrating how I design.
