Yunnan Hotel

Kunming, China
The Yunnan Hotel is located in Kunming, Yunnan province. Yunnan translates as 'South of the Clouds' and is China's most diverse province. It is home to 24 ethnic groups and has three UNESCO World Heritage Sites. As the capital and largest city of Yunnan province, Kunming is the political, economic, communication, and cultural centre of Yunnan, as well as the seat of the provincial government.

The Yunnan Hotel is positioned as a landmark mixed-use development in the historical centre of Kunming containing primarily the new regional hotel, together with restaurants and boutique shopping.

Located in proximity of the Kunming Old Street, an area that is reviving its traditional architecture, the podium of the Yunnan Hotel captures its spirit to become a beacon and gateway.

The design was inspired by the traditional culture and character of the province and the scale of Kunming Old Town creating a podium that weaves harmoniously with the surrounding city. The smaller elements cascade from the simple tower volumes creating a rich and dynamic public realm.
The old grain of the city is reinterpreted, adjusted, and enhanced to fit the needs of a modern retail centre. The result is a combination of smaller volumes that stack and terrace to create dynamic spaces for its users while providing diverse commercial opportunities.
